Alternatives to Your Morning Coffee: Other Hot Drinks

  |     |   Food and Drink

Most people love a hot cup of coffee in the morning, especially during the cold, snowy months in Centennial, Colorado. But not everyone loves coffee, and not everyone’s coffee loves them back. If you don’t care for the stuff or you’ve had to cut back for some reason, you might enjoy one of these hot drinks as an alternative. Check out our favorite non-coffee hot drinks to kick-start your morning.

Caffeinated Options

If you’re still looking for a strong caffeine buzz, here are some coffee alternatives for you.

Yerba Mate

Yerba mate offers a caffeine punch, and it’s packed with nutrients, too. Made from South American rainforest holly tree leaves, this tea can be consumed straight or with honey. Yerba mate has a much more mild flavor compared to coffee, and many say its caffeine buzz is more stable and long-lasting.

A good cup of masala chai can warm your heart and caffeinate your brain. Masala chai is a drink of Indian origin that mixes black tea with specific aromatic spices and herbs, including cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and black pepper. You can find chai for sale in tea bags and as loose-leaf tea. Chai is usually made with milk and either sugar or honey.

Matcha is a powdered green tea that’s dissolved in water. Because you’re consuming the tea itself, the caffeine content is higher than traditional green tea — and so is the nutrient content. Like yerba mate, matcha delivers caffeine in a more measured form, giving you longer-lasting energy.

Decaf Choices

If you want a bold wake-up call without the caffeine, add a spoonful or two of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice to hot water. Sweeten with a dollop of honey to make it more palatable, and cut it with hot apple cider if it’s too strong.

Herbal and Decaf Teas

Hundreds of herbal and decaf tea preparations are available. If you’re not sure where to start, check out naturally decaffeinated rooibos tea blends.
