What to Consider When You’re Ready to Adopt a Pet

small dog modelingColoradans love their pets. As an apartment community in Centennial, Colorado, we love pets, too! Each furry friend who walks through our doors is part of our family. We can certainly appreciate the comfort and happiness four-legged fur babies bring to people's lives. With this love in mind, we wanted to share a few things you should consider before you adopt a pet.

How Often Do You Travel?

Whether it's for work or play, road warriors need to be aware of the amount of time they're away from home. Certain pets will fare better when you're away than others. Cats tend to be great roommates for people who travel quite a bit because they're fairly self-sustaining. Dogs, on the other hand, usually like their humans to be near them as often as possible.

How Active Are You?

Some breeds simply have a lot more energy than others. If you love to run, Labradors and border collies can really give you a run for your money. They require constant activity and have plenty of energy to expend at all times. If you're not super active, greyhounds, Great Danes and other "big breeds" tend to be couch potatoes that just want to be loved.

Of course, plenty of little dogs want to be lazy, too. You just have to find the pup that's right for you.

Does Your Apartment Community Have Restrictions?

Before you adopt a pet, it's important to consider the obligations you've agreed to within your lease. You don't want to fall in love with a pet you're ultimately not allowed to bring into your home.

Be sure you understand the specifics, including:

  • Breeds
  • Weight restrictions
  • Types of pets allowed
  • Number of pets permitted

Do You Have Money Available for Emergencies?

Vet bills are no laughing matter. They can become ridiculously expensive very quickly. A minor scrape can cost you hundreds of dollars. If you don't have money available for emergencies, you'll end up charging your credit cards and paying ridiculous interest rates. The cost is worth it for a member of the family, but if you can avoid the additional fees, you'll be better off in the end.
