It may feel as though Christmas was just last week, but already the gloom of January is behind us and the most romantic night of the year is rapidly approaching.

It’s the ideal evening for you and that special someone to enjoy something a bit different, so why not set the tone with one of these luxurious Valentine’s Day cocktails?

SOME SIMPLE VALENTINE’S COCKTAIL RECIPES
MATA HARI

A vivid romantic red in color, the Mata Hari uses good cognac and vermouth as a base, offset with syrup and pomegranate juice for sweetness.

Ingredients

1 ¼ oz cognac
1 oz sweet vermouth
¾ oz lemon juice
½ oz plain syrup
¾ oz pomegranate juice
Mix all the ingredients with ice, shake thoroughly and strain into a chilled glass.

For an extra flourish, you can decorate with rosebuds, if available.

FIGGY SPARKLER
Champagne must be the ultimate in romantic drinks and it’s the base for this unique recipe.

Ingredients

4 oz champagne (or other sparkling wine)
1 ½ oz vodka
1 fig (dried or fresh)
2 halved orange slices
6 cranberries
Crush three of the cranberries and mix them with the fig, oranges, vodka and some ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into flute glasses. Top up with the champagne.

Use the remaining cranberries and some orange twist as an optional garnish.

RED LOTUS
Vodka is probably the most popular cocktail base of all, but this one adds a lychee liqueur for a unique twist of flavor.

Ingredients

1 ½ oz vodka
1 ½ oz lychee liqueur (a number of brands are now available in stores)
1 oz cranberry juice
Simply mix with ice in a shaker and strain into glasses. You can add lychees or cranberries as a garnish if required.

CLOUD NINE
Combine the sweet pink of strawberries and cream with vodka for perhaps the ultimate in Valentine’s Day luxury and romance.

Ingredients

2 oz whipped dessert vodka
1 oz strawberry liqueur
1 oz milk mixed with 1 oz cream (“half and half”)
Put all the ingredients in a blender with a cup of ice and mix until smooth.

Pour into cocktail glasses. These can be rimmed with strawberry candy if desired.

Of course, these are just a few of the many cocktails which can make for a really special Valentine’s Day, and it’s just one of the many celebrations the residents of our Centennial apartments are looking forward to.
